Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
