Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this album may look more like an arduous scholarly examination than the latest popular music project from a musician whose last single was a collaboration with a global pop star. Divided into 4 separate parts and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged album exploring female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily change, often by way of the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is launched upwards here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars look quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to escape overly intellectual posturing is nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, its stakes are far greater here, with the balancing act more pronounced. The element that truly raises this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, is a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly on the stunning Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in with comedic force. The song immediately segues into the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener never quite understand—nor want to know—where it is going next."

Nearly each song concludes at a totally different point from where it started. One moment explores the transient nature of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

A key balancing act of the album involves navigating the line between radical experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has become the artist's first work to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spins skyward. This feat gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is an abundant source of buried gems that requires time to completely mine but never feels like hard work. While other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
