Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
